…NOW SWIM!

Jurij has been teaching some of the best classes I’ve done in Melbourne in years – not that I know who’s been teaching in years anyway – and also makes well fine pancakes. Gabrielle is one of my dearest friends who has just finished hell with me, and is the most kick-arse dancer south of the equator. This weekend as oxoxox they’re running a workshop at Chunky Move.

…NOW SWIM!

A Dance Workshop with Gabrielle Nankivell and Jurij Konjar

There are several ways of learning how to swim. One is by taking swimming lessons, slow and gradual. Another one is to be thrown into deep water and learn how to swim instantly.

This workshop will explore some of the situations you would get yourself into, should you audition for a Belgian dance, theatre or performance company. It’s dance at it’s largest, flirting with theatre, psychology, film and movement research.

Don’t miss your chance to test yourself and experience this adrenaline rush. We’ll make our weaknesses our strong points and vice versa. We’ll crash and recover. The aim is surviving situations, not just with your life to show for it, but with a feeling you’ve made the most of it.

We’ll get there by taking the tasks given to the extreme, whatever that might be for each individual.

You are being thrown into the deep waters of the unknown and the difficult.

More about Jurij Konjar

As a fat teenager in Yugoslavia, Jurij learnt how to fall well doing Judo and sang in church choirs. Then in Slovenia he changed this lifestyle for competitions in Ballroom dancing and later Jazz, Ballet and Horton. He came two-thirds through London’s musical academy Urdang and later through PARTS in Brussels – the ROSAS associated contemporary dance academy. He performed across Europe with Les Ballets C de la B, Roberto Olivan, Josse de Pauw and En Knap. In 2003 he established OX with Gabrielle Nankivell. Since then he has made his own work which tours internationally and in 2005 has won several awards. His next work will be Open Space Hotel, co-directed by Gabrielle Nankivell, which will premiere at the Body Corporate in North Melbourne Town Hall in June 2006.

In 2005, Jurij taught workshops and classes in Belgium, France, Slovenia, Cyprus, Turkey, Armenia and Australia. In Melbourne Jurij teaches at Dance Works, Dance House and Chunky Move.

OX

With the performance titled The Right Mistakes, OX was established by Gabrielle and Jurij in October 2003 with the intent of touring Andalusian villages and towns in 2004, playing on the street as well as in theatres. The tour continued into 2005 and Travelling Light, Catharsis for Beginners and Documentary were created along the way. Presently in Melbourne, OX is being co-produced by the Arts House and Exodos Slovenia to create Open Space Hotel, premiering in June 06.

OX is based in Ljubljana, Slovenia as well as in Brussels, Belgium.
