While I was trawling through the internet, scraping up stuff on Miss International Queen 2005 I found a longish entry on Shanghai-based blogger 快乐的馒头—米卡多多, entitled 同性恋英语 – Queer English. Along with the great line, 这里的变装秀非常有名,你一定要看看。 – “Their drag queen show is very famous around here. You’ve got to see it.”, I saw the phrase 变性.
变性 generally means ‘denaturation’ but I’ve seen it a few times lately meaning ‘transsexual’, instead of using 人妖, and also seen it in combination as 变性人妖.
In the meantime though, now that my linguistic spelunking is done for the day, Korea’s she-male pop-band who I love to love got a major interview from QQ.com about a month ago, which I’d have never read if I hadn’t known about 变性.
