para/site messes with lenses

Parasite Art Space in Sheung Wan opened Take a ST/Roll 圓.遊.會 earlier this month, which is running until mid-April and includes weekend workshops for creating optical tools from everyday objects.

Take a ST/Roll is a playful, two-level experimentation based on a year-long research process of video-shooting HK’s city space and everyday objects with an anamorphic lens capable of a 360˚capture. The event, an exhibition with two weekend workshops, is open to the public on March 4 to April 10, 2005 at Para/Site Art Space in Sheung Wan.

ONE GAME TWO TARGETS

Take a ST/Roll is a playful, two-level experimentation based on a year-long research process of video-shooting HK’s city space and everyday objects with an anamorphic lens capable of a 360˚capture. The event, an exhibition with two weekend workshops, is open to the public on March 4 to April 10, 2005 at Para/Site Art Space in Sheung Wan.

Playing with tools /subverting consumer usage & exploring new narrative possibilities

We attempt to challenge the lens package’s pre-defined usage –an obsession with panoramic VR — to invent alternative usages while playfully explore new narrative possibilities with the flat donut-shape moving image resulting from the use of the special lens. The new kind of frame born by the donut-shape has led to new story-telling possibilities.

SPACE ON DISPLAY: a four-part event

The flamboyance of our exhaustive experiments with the lens will be presented as a computerized data space, called Donut/face: the Database, allowing the visitor to get a glimpse of the diversity and variety of our matching exercises between camera, spatial and movement factors.

The “donut pictures” are turned into the stage for drama, intensifying the anticipation for inherent, limitless stories to emerge within the self-contained, framed donut space.

What “12 Robes / 4 Couples / 1 Cycle” and “Interview with the Queen”are is subject to the visitors’interpretation and experience. Be there to check them out!

Two weekend workshops are organized for those interested in creating optical tools with banal everyday objects that make us see and move around differently. Tools created will be integrated into the exhibition space.
